Academic Affairs

The Office of Academic Affairs here at Southern University-Baton Rouge (SUBR) encourages faculty members and instructors to expand the learning opportunities for students by designing, creating, and developing courses, seminars, workshops, and webinars for electronic delivery. The courses are available in the University's Blackboard content management system and as stand-alone modules.

Course and program information is updated monthly.

Electronic Courses @ Southern University

Students often think of learning as bound by the page, whether paper or digital. By offering learning opportunities that are performance-based, multi-media rich, and aligned with learning outcomes as well as diverse learning styles via interactive electronic content management platforms , SUBR faculty not only teach beyond the page but support students in their quests to become engaged, effective, and successful learners.

There are different formats for electronic courses:

  • Electronic CourseModules: Some of the courses, seminars, workshops, and webinars are built within individual self-contained learning modules at the topic level. Each topic includes the relevant subtopics, learning outcomes, lesson lectures/presentations, activities, assignments, and learning assessments. Modules designed at the topic level, ensures that the instructional design remains intact regardless of the electronic technology used for delivery. Each assignment, project, test question, and lesson is aligned topically and by learning outcome. Topics can be used or combined in any order. The video and/or audio enhancements for each course are designed with consideration of low- or high-bandwidth capabilities of students' computer equipment and Internet access.
  • Online Courses: Traditional courses that have been adapted as internet- or web-connected courses, web-enhanced courses, and/or blended courses.
  • Compressed Video Courses: Some courses are also taught via compressed video. These courses may or may not be in modular format. Instruction is provided in the compressed videoconference suites on campus that are accessed from remote sites. Instructors of these courses may also include web enhancements.

SUBR undergraduate courses that are taught via the web and/or as videoconference courses are listed above under the alphabetized college-tabs. Courses are also shown for the SUBR Law Center as well as for the Graduate School and Continuing Education. Students wishing to enroll in courses must contact the departments for further information about when the courses will be offered and enrollment procedures. The contact number for each department and/or program is listed next to the course/department title.

  • At this time there is one (1) degree program offered online at Southern University. This is a graduate rehabilitation counseling program offered through the Rehabilitation Counseling and Disability Studies Department (225-771-0046).
